Topic : Research on Jam Factories

I'd be interested to know if anyone has any information about the old Jam Factory that I believe to have existed in Woodgate Lane, Borden?

I'm specifically interested in any old photo's, information about when it dated from or any information about the Goodhew family that ran it.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ah Borden Fete, I remember it well, as an eight or nine year old going to Borden Primarry School i was one of the lucky ones who got chosen to do the Maypole Dancing along with my Twin brother and also the Brett twins (girls) Rosemary Philips (Rev Philips daughter) David Wells and lots more who escape my at the moment.

Can anybody remember the wobbly bikes ? a certain area was roped of and a cricuit was ment to be followed on the bikes that had the axle inserted off centre of the wheel so that they would go up and down at different times as you were riding them and next to that was the coconut shy stand.

I also remember the time that they had for the main event "the Dagenham Girl Pipers"

I have done a lot of research on the hisotry of Borden. My book 'Borden the hisotry of a Kentish parish' has recently gone out of print. It contains a good deal on the Allen family. Copies may still be on sale from Sittingbourne heritage Museum website or Faversham Fleur de Lys site. However the pamphlet I wrote on the hisotry of The Plestor where the Allens lived is still on sale via the Historical research group of Sittingbourne who also have a website. it contains inventories of the house when the Allens lived there.

By the way I didnt realise Christopher married 4 times, I have him down for 3wives!

Topic : Allen family of Oad Street, Borden

Well, here I am, an American genealogist, working on a family with a Borden tie-in.  My link to your village is by way of my Barham family of Boughton Monchelsea.  Of that group, Mary Barham, daughter of Mildred Franckelyn Barham and Thomas Barham, was born in the 1560s (we think), and married Christopher Allen of Borden in 1588.  She was his second of FOUR wives, the first having been Dorothy Maplesden of Marden, the third and fourth being Susan Tonge and Anne Colville Lambe (a widow), respectively.  I'm working on transcribing Christopher Allen's will of 1642, and in it he makes mention of two brothers-in-law, Richard and Thomas Finch, who are among the witnesses to the will.  Beyond Allen's submission to the 1619 Visitation of Kent, and extracts from the Borden parish registers taken from LDS films, I know little about the Allens of Borden, and would like to identify the sisters of Christopher who married the Finches.  They--the Allens--merit a couple of short paragraphs in Hasted's article on Borden, but I've not seen much else.  I believe Allen was in his late 70s at his death, and it's possible that one of his children served as a Jurat in Maidstone.

I'd welcome any and all help from history buffs knowledgable on the Allen family.  Mary Barham Allen died in 1594 from complications attending the birth of her third child, her husband's namesake Christopher.  Christopher Sr.'s primary heir was his son John, who in turn had been named for his grandfather John Allen of Borden.  I suspect that many of the extended family were buried at Borden church.

I am researching the cheeseman family who resided in Borden during the middle of the 1800s.  Are there any Cheeseman families residing in Borden now?

thanks, melanie

Can you put a name to these faces?

The third milkman from the left is Norman Rossiter (foremen) the man in the middle,(sixth from the left) is Stan Whitehead (the owner) the fifth man down from the left I believe is Dave Spinks (who I worked with )and the eight from the left is Tom Friday (who my brother worked with).

This would have been taken about 1962-63,can anybody recognize the milkman from this picture?

Whitehead
